Japan Travelogue Series: Kappabashi
Kappabashi Street (かっぱ橋道具街, Kappabashi Dōgugai) is a shopping street between Ueno and Asakusa. Kappabashi, commonly known as “Chef’s Paradise”, is where all kitchen tools and tableware can be found up for grabs for any aspiring cook or chef. They can be anything — crockery, ovens, restaurant furniture, kitchen utensils, and more! The prices are reasonable and the area is known for selling the finest quality Japanese chef knives.
Japanese knives are prized for their quality and craftsmanship. They are built to last a lifetime and can even be passed on to the next generations with the proper care. Chefs from all around the world find their best knives at Kappabashi. Several knife shops have been in the business for many generations and can give you advice on the best type of knife for you.
Kappa-dera or Sōgen Temple, a Zen Buddshist temple, is a stone’s throw away from Kappabashi. The temple is named after the kappa, a Japanese folklore figure.
