Japan Travelogue Series: Japanese Style Breakfast
Traditional Japanese cuisine is a combination of staple foods available in the region. Usually, it consists of white rice with one or more side dishes and main dishes, sometimes served with miso soup and pickles. Japanese food has had strong influences from Korea and China for thousands of years. It was only in the last few hundred years that foreign trade and religion made any impact on traditional Japanese fare and influenced it to what we now know it to be.
Meals in Japan usually consist of three dishes, a bowl of rice, a cup of soup and one side dish. A typical traditional Japanese breakfast is based on this concept and is mostly in the style of a set meal. Rice is a staple along with miso soup and some boiled vegetables as side dishes. Natto (fermented soybeans), grilled fish and pickled vegetables are often served with the meal as well. What makes the meal well balanced and nutritious is the pairing between seasonal vegetables, carbohydrates, and fermented foods.
