KCP is a wonderful program, especially as a beginner in Japanese.

Haylee from Summer Short 2023

Which events or activities did you find the most satisfying and why?

I think the cotobade (I apologize if I spelled it incorrectly) was a very fun and beneficial event that helped me improve my Japanese. I liked that it was a team effort, because I don't think I would have been able to do it on my own. I was very nervous, but it taught me to push past my worries and focus on learning better. I felt more comfortable in making mistakes since then, and I enjoyed seeing all the levels at KCP do their part. I was also able to imagine myself being at those higher levels one day. I also really liked the day trip to Yamanashi, because I learned a lot about Japan outside of the big cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto that I had seen. I had many memorable experiences, and would definitely participate again.

What were the most productive and interesting aspects of the program for you? The least interesting and productive?

I'd say that the two weeks we got as Summer Short Term students before starting the actual Summer Term with the international students helped a lot. It prepared me for the intensity and structure of the program. I'd say the structure of the program and every day classes were very helpful in advancing my Japanese skills. Switching from some review and practice with my peers, to dictation, to kanji, etc, was engaging. I just think the intensity and structure of the program was ideal, at least for me.

What activities or materials did you find most helpful (e.g., pair work, drill practice, tests, small group sessions, textbooks, games)?

Honestly, all of the materials were helpful. I think the textbooks were perfect for giving examples and advancing in my learning. I also think the files that we received to use for the chapter reading and online activities on GoKCP were nice to review before class. I also think pair work and drill practice helped me get warmed up and feel more comfortable with making mistakes with someone else.

Any suggestions for improving class activities or materials?

I think the structure and materials for classes are great as they are now!

Anything you especially liked in the living arrangements? Any problems you experienced?

I really liked the environment of the dorm. I stayed at the Musashi Kosugi dorms, which were so accommodating and the staff were very friendly. I was even able to stay for a few days after the program! They had many anemities and allowed you to borrow items such as vacuums, irons, etc. I would highly recommend to keep this dorm available for future KCP students! The commute was very busy in the mornings, but I'm sure it's the same around the city.

Any comments or tips for prospective/new KCP students?

KCP is a wonderful program, especially as a beginner in Japanese. I feel that my language skills improved immensely in such a short amount of time. The people at KCP are very kind and supportive, which motivated me to do my best every day! It is a little bit intense, but it's still manageable!

I love that the school is in the heart of Tokyo and that all the classes are in Japanese. Since the classes are taught only in Japanese it pushes me to study more.
